A 72-year-old nurse will spend at least 18 months behind bars after she ran over and killed a three-year-old Sydney boy as he crossed the road with his mother.

Jian Li Tang crossed onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into the boy in Eastwood, in Sydney's northwest in July last year.

His mother was unharmed.

Tang was today sentenced to three years in prison, though she will be eligible for parole in 18 months.

The offender is a nurse for disabled people, and has devoted her life to caring for others, the court heard.

Since accidently killing the three-year-old boy, she has suffered severe depression and anxiety, possible post-traumatic stress, and hasn't been able to work.

She has also asked to be given the opportunity to personally apologise to the family.
