'He tried to steal her gun': Gold Coast driver 'assaults female cop'

A Gold Coast driver who ploughed into a roadworks site had to be held down by four members of the public after he allegedly assaulted a female police officer.

The 44-year-old man was allegedly seen driving a ute at high speeds on the Pacific Motorway at Robina before hitting two cars and striking a barrier inside a roadworks site after 8pm yesterday.

Police allege he then tried to push a woman off her motorcycle while she was stopped at the site.

A 47-year-old police officer from the Forensic Crash Unit was driving past and stopped to confront the man.

The two became involved in a struggle before the man allegedly assaulted the policewoman.

Members of the public jumped in to help hold the man down until more officers arrived on the scene.

"The offender's grappled very hard with her and attempted to take her gun, but luckily there was other members of the public that were able to assist her in holding the man down," Inspector Brendan Wiblen told 9News.

The driver was taken into custody.

The senior constable was taken to the Robina Hospital to be treated.

The man was also taken to hospital to treat a laceration to his head and shoulder.

Several other motorists suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Police are attempting to track down the motorcycle rider the man approached. They allege he was attempting to steal the sports bike.

The man is assisting police with their inquiries.
